The Contingent

The City That Bleeds
Table 1 - Richard Moore

Baltimore’s got it all: history, literature, seafood, music… and vampires. Usually they’re at least containable; there’s enough Contingent members in Charm City to keep their numbers quelled, and they know better than to kill indiscreetly on our streets. But deaths by exsanguination have been on the rise in tourist areas for the past few weeks, and our connections in the city government are getting restless. Figuring out what’s provoking the attacks would be good; killing all the bloodsuckers you can find would be even better. This game will focus on action, NPC interaction, and a touch of investigation.

Hidden beneath the prosperous downtown of Red Wing, sinister experiments have been conducted on unwilling test subjects. The resulting supernatural side-effects have spread quietly throughout the town. Who conducted this research and why? What exactly was done to the people trapped in these dank cells? Who covered-up the entire project? This game will focus on research, exploration and investigation.

Chester summoned Ed to Red Wing, mentioning teens going missing over several summers. Chester suspects they could be related. Ed helped uncover a plot to test arcane-infused water on the youth of the city via a strange tank at the public pool. The group discovered the water’s source, as well as holding cells for the teenagers, in a secret room underneath Red Wing, but no leads on where the teens might be now

In Meredith, New Hampshire the month of April has seen a rise in the number of people reported missing. Also, several of missing persons that have been solved in the last few months have been found to be winter suicides. While this trend is normal, the sheer volume of cases is enough above normal statistic variance to have caused Chester to reach out and ask some hunters to look into it.

Is something hunting the locals and disguising their work? Or is it a normal spring in NH? This game involves investigation, research, and some action with a side of moral ambiguity.

Meredith, New Hampshire is still stuck in Winter when Ed arrives, following another of Chester’s leads. Several townsfolk committed uncharacteristic acts of passion, from suicide to bestiality. In addition, distance and direction distort in the area. And it all seems to be linked to the arrival of a beautiful stranger that lives out on Bear Island. The group travel out to the island, only to find bear traps and a crazed man intent on killing them. Attempts to tranq him fail and Ed resorts to lethal force. Beneath the abandoned vacation home on the island, the group find the beauty and hear her strange tale of being created, not born. Her story matches the Greek myth of Galatea, but this means little to the group.

Plans are made to contact Chester for more instruction, but Ed must leave to seek medical attention for the leg wounds from one of the bear traps. The creature remains in isolation on Bear Island in the meantime.

Washington DC is the center of seedy deals and sordid politics — but that’s all in a day’s work for our elected officials. It appears though that wolves are roaming wild in the city and seem to have a taste for politicians. Several have been attacked, but fortunately, no one has been killed. Members of the Contingent are sent to investigate and put a stop to these attacks, if they prove to be more than ordinary.

23 year old Jarrod Tyler became a statistic, going missing 2 weeks ago. However, a decrepit old man with gaps in his memory was found recently, claiming to be the missing Jarrod. March finds Ed traveling to Provo, UT at Chester’s request. A 20-something kid named Jarrod Tyler vanished two weeks ago, only to have a man in his 70 turn up in the last few days claiming to be Tyler. Digging around led the group to Happy Valley Retirement Community and one of their recently deceased residents, Philip Cohen. Cohen’s past is a fake, and his death is within days of Tyler’s vanishing. He also left a substantial amount of money to Happy Valley at his death.

The group attempt a subtle bit of snooping at Happy Valley, but resort to strong-arm tactics when discovered. Dr Hardwick, the owner, is obviously corrupt and quite dangerous. But the self-identified Magus is not so dangerous to avoid capture. The group take the unconscious doctor, as well as 6 items know as the Relics of the Iron Tallow, to Chester. However, Cohen – also known as Ironwick – is long gone and there’s no way to reverse what happened to Tyler without stealing someone else’s youth.

In central New England several cases of fatal animal attacks have been reported, but the authorities have yet to connect them. After the recent reports of an organized supernatural presence in the area, Chester has been asking hunters to follow up on any leads, no matter how tenuous. Session Writeup – Ed

In April, Chester directs Ed to a private party held at a secluded estate near Camp David. Sounds like Chester’s figured out the origin of the girl they met in Meredith, New Hampshire back in February. Chester wants them to pose as investors, get as much info as they can, and get out.

The party turns out to be a sales pitch for a new version 2.0 sex-bot that morph into your perfect sexual partner. During the private demonstrations, something goes wrong and the bots start shocking and sucking the life out of their partners. The group rescues their own, as well as a Mexican gentleman of questionable profession named Santiago. During the resulting chaos, when both versions of the sex bots attack the patrons, the group manage to find Dr Von Hamner’s lab. The doctor is despondent and takes his own life despite the Dr Skaar’s (another player) attempts to talk him down. There’s no time to mourn however, as the last remaining version 2 sex-bot, now 40 ft tall, punches through the 3rd story windows in attempts to drain the group. Dr Skaar grabs Dr Von Hamner’s mad-science ray-gun and eventually slays the monster. Wasting no more time, the group snatch computer hard drives journals, and odd materials and make their escape. But not being Ed fires a flare into the old mansion with the intent of burning it to the ground.

The info recovered from the Von Hamner estate ties several elements together:

Project Chimera

Notes point to Dr Von Hamner working with Project Chimera, a group that harvests supernatural energies and technologies for the betterment of mankind. Notes link them to the following products:

  • Glimmer Cream: a product made by Rejuvidine from the stolen essence of street urchins. One of the group had experience with this.
  • Ümph: an energy drink bottled in Red Wing, MN. This lines up with Ed’s investigations in Red Wing.
  • Filexa: an anti-STD drug produced by GesChem. A group member explained this was used to make the blood of the patient uneatable for Vampires in the DC area.
  • Nightshade: Sunglasses to be worn at night. No one has heard of this product.

Operation Gestalt

While Project Chimera seemed mostly harmless, the notes also mentioned another organization named Operation Gestalt. It’s actions seemed far more sinister. The group found less info on Operation Gestalt, but it was enough to identify shell companies and manufacturing sites across the US.

Session Writeup – Ed

May takes Ed back to Red Wing. Chester wants the Contingent to look into the energy drink Ümph that’s coming out the bottling plant there. Ed, already being in the state, heads down to the Minneapolis air port to pick up his regular compatriots.

Fearing that it’s the same group as before, Ed and company check out the original holding cells for the 6 youth under downtown. Finding it exactly as they left it, the group then split their focus on the bottling plant, local water table records, and local rumors. Eventually, they meet back up and decide the bottling company is worth a check, with the exception of one member who opts to talk to local high school kids.

The bottling plant has only recently started bottling again, and exclusively makes Ümph. Under the cover of darkness, they sneak in and look around. In a secure room, they find a similar ornated iron pump as before, but this time in the shape of an eagle’s head. Next to it is a stainless steel pipe that carries water into the bottling plant itself. The room is covered in more arcane characters and the group identifies at least part of it as magic to prevent scrying. Disrupting those portion, they grab a water sample and head out.

Talking to the high school kids turns up a lead of a strange purple-haired girl named Whim that says she’ll see us again at the homecoming game. Naturally, this draws the group in. In the midst of some supernatural fit by a cheerleader, things spiral into chaos. Ed tranqs 2 kids he fears are selling Ümph to others, only to discover they’re common high school junkies. He tries a bit of “Scared Straight” therapy before rushing to help subdue Whim.

The group discovered that Whim is actually Elsa, the first child kidnapped back in 2005. She shows a lot of signs of mental disorder and seems intent on pushing Ümph on children to see if they awaken as well, even after told how it can seriously injure them. The group take a sedated Whim to Chester, hoping he can help the girl.

But somebody has to guard them, bring them food, ask them questions. The Contingent is a large group of individuals, but everybody gets safehouse duty eventually. Sitting in a building for days on end with the creatures that hate you and you despise in return, what could possibly go wrong?
